Our History

Financial Designs, Inc. (FDI) was founded in 1974 by George J. Pratt, Sr. as an independent insurance agency specializing in Life and Health insurance for small businesses and key personnel.

David A. Pratt joined the firm in 1978 and developed a specialty in qualified retirement plans for small businesses.  In addition to his efforts with FDI, he has enjoyed a long career in the field of third party administration of small business retirement plans, including Defined Benefit Pension Plans, 401(k)s, Profit Sharing, Pension, ESOP, SEP, SARSEP, Simple and plans for non-profit entities.  Mr. Pratt has handled thousands of plans in all phases from inception to termination and wind-up and has represented many clients before the IRS and Department of Labor.  David holds professional designations from the American Society of Pension Professionals and Actuaries, including:  Certified Pension Consultant (CPC) - one of the 1st 100 in the country to have earned this designation in 1983, and Qualified Plan Financial Consultant (QPFC), earned in 2008.  David earned a Master in Business Administration from the College (now University) of St. Thomas in St. Paul in 1983.  He also earned the designation Certified Financial Planner (CFP (R)) from the American College in 2008.  Most recently, David earned the  Accredited Investment Fiduclary (R), (AIF(R)) Designation from the Center for FIduciary Studies in January, 2013.  The AIF Designation certifies he has specialized knowledge of fiduciary standards of care and their application to the investment management process.

Chad D. Pratt joined the firm in 2000 after having worked  in the securities industry for 3 years with Piper Jaffray and American Express.  Chad specializes in portfolio analysis and in the development of personalized financial plans.
